Where to Eat Near Hakodate Station: 3 Local Food Experiences

Grill your own skewers, cook Hokkaido lamb over charcoal, or try Hakodate's famous squid. All three are within about an 8-minute walk of Hakodate Station.

01 · Yakitori

Kushiyama Kushizo

  • Grill it yourself
  • 1 min from the station
  • Counter seats

A small skewer bar where you season your own skewers and grill them over charcoal, sitting around a U-shaped counter. With Hakodate Station behind you, it's just inside the arcade on your right.

My visit

I went on a weekend evening, around 6–7 pm. I had salmon belly (harasu), chicken neck (seseri), vegetables and other skewers. The best part was grilling everything ourselves. It's a rare experience.

02 · Jingisukan (grilled lamb)

Jingisukan Hakodate Yoshida

  • Charcoal grill
  • About 50 seasonings
  • 7–8 min walk

Jingisukan, named after Genghis Khan, is Hokkaido's signature grilled lamb dish. Here the lamb is cooked over charcoal on a shichirin, a small charcoal grill, and you can mix two Hokkaido-style sauces with about 50 seasonings however you like. Signature cuts include rolled lamb (maru-ramu), fresh lamb shoulder loin and lamb shoulder. The menu also has grilled udon and grilled rice to finish.

A seafood izakaya that keeps fresh seafood in tanks inside the restaurant. The official website recommends Hakodate's famous live squid as sashimi. Before you go

  • All three restaurants list credit cards as accepted.
  • Hours at small restaurants can change, so check Google Maps on the day.
  • Some small izakaya in Japan still allow smoking inside. Restaurants that allow smoking must post a sign at the entrance.
  • Many izakaya serve a small appetizer called otoshi, which comes with a seat charge.

Written by Shunta Matsudaira, who lives in Hakodate. I've eaten at Kushiyama Kushizo. I haven't eaten at the other two yet, so for those I only describe facts from their official websites, Hakobura (Hakodate City's official tourism website) and restaurant listing sites.

Information was checked in October 2026, including opening hours on Google Maps. Hours, prices and menus can change.
